Better Grammar Than McCain (2008)

Supporters of John McCain's presidential campaign can now get, for a sizable donation, a banner that proclaims their family's support for the Arizona Senator. The banner is personalized so that it reads, for example, "The Smith's Support John McCain."


That's right. "Smith's." Not "Smiths."

This is, of course, an abomination. Plural nouns do not take an apostrophe, even in the heat of a presidential campaign. If we can't trust Senator McCain to be careful with punctuation, how can we trust him with our national security, the federal budget, our children's futures, and all that other stuff?

Do we know where Senator Obama stands on the apostrophe issue?

Coffee in Cedar Rapids (2011-2014)

As of current date only two of these remain: Coffee Emporium and Roasters.   Perhaps because we possess an extra portion of the entrepreneurial initiative that has made this country great, or perhaps because the multinational corporations were late moving in, Cedar Rapids has an excellent variety of local coffeehouses. Your humble correspondent now undertakes to introduce you to them; even local residents may not know about all of these. Lost at the Lost Cuban (2013)

The Lost Cuban in 2016 (Google Earth screenshot) The boys were on spring break, and I'm on sabbatical leave, so there was no good reason not to go out to lunch Friday. I'd been wanting to check out the Lost Cuban, which has moved into the space at 209 3rd St SE that has been a number of things in recent years. We did the downtown parking thing without too much difficulty, then wended our way through the skywalks which wasn't really necessary but I do have a thing for the skywalks. (For the record, the Lost Cuban is near the Armstrong's Building, so the nearest Skywalk entrance is by Hills Bank and the temporary library.)
